Spiderforest Comic of the Week: Malaak - Angel of Peace by Joumana Medlej

I've been meaning to check this out properly for a while, and I'm glad I finally got a nudge, because I wasn't disappointed. This one is a superhero story - which is still isn't that common in webcomics. But then Malaak is a pretty unusual superhero.

The story is set in Lebanon, where a war has been going on for years with little rhyme or reason. The ancient guardians of the country create Malaak to be a guardian living amongst the humans - though it takes her quite a while to realise this, and even longer to work out what her powers are. As she learns about herself, she also learns that Jinn have a big hand in the war, and she sets out to fight them.

On the whole, this comic has a fresh, youthful feel to it. It remains pretty positive, but at the same time it has a good balance between realistic and fantastical. So, on one side, you have the Jinn and the superpowers, and on the other side you have the guns and bullet-riddled houses that are upsettingly familiar. The art is great - bright and bold. Plus, it's always interesting to get a glimpse into a different country.
